Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a Markdown (.md) file to PDF?
Upload an existing .md file using the 'Upload .md' button, or type your Markdown directly into the left editor pane. A live preview renders on the right. Once ready, click 'Download PDF' to export a fully styled PDF to your device.
Can I write or edit Markdown code directly in the online editor?
Yes. The left pane is a full-featured plain-text code editor pre-loaded with a sample Markdown document. You can type, paste, or edit Markdown syntax directly, and the preview updates in real time as you write.
Is there a real-time side-by-side preview of the rendered PDF?
Yes. The right pane shows a live HTML render of your Markdown, styled with the currently selected theme. It re-renders within milliseconds of each keystroke so you can see exactly how the final PDF will look.
How do I switch the page orientation between Portrait and Landscape?
Use the 'Orientation' dropdown in the toolbar at the top of the page. Select Portrait for standard vertical documents or Landscape for wide tables and presentations. The setting is applied when you click 'Download PDF'.
Can I select standard document sizes like A4 or US Letter?
Yes. The 'Paper' dropdown lets you choose A4, Letter, or A3 paper size before exporting. A4 is the global standard, while Letter is common in the United States and Canada.
Are Markdown tables and code syntax highlighting preserved in the output PDF?
Yes. The tool uses GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) parsing, which fully supports tables, fenced code blocks with language labels, blockquotes, task lists, and nested lists. Code blocks are rendered in a monospace font with background styling in the GitHub theme.
Can I upload an existing .md file from my computer?
Yes. Click the 'Upload .md' button in the top toolbar and select any .md, .markdown, or plain .txt file. Its content will be loaded instantly into the editor, and the preview will update immediately.
Does converting Markdown to PDF work locally in my browser?
Yes. The entire conversion — parsing Markdown to HTML, rendering it, and generating the PDF — happens 100% inside your browser using JavaScript. No file is ever sent to a server.
Is there any cost or subscription required to use this tool?
No. The Markdown to PDF converter is completely free with no account registration, no daily usage limits, no file size caps, and no subscription required.
Can I customize page margins before exporting to PDF?
The tool applies sensible default margins (15mm on all sides) automatically. Custom margin controls are not currently exposed in the UI, but the default margins work well for most documents.
How are embedded images in Markdown handled during export?
Images referenced by a full public URL (e.g., https://example.com/image.png) will load and render in the preview and PDF. Images using local file paths (e.g., ./image.png) cannot load due to browser security restrictions on local file access.
Can I render mathematical formulas or LaTeX syntax in Markdown?
The current version does not include a math rendering engine. LaTeX-style formulas (e.g., $E=mc^2$) will appear as plain text in the output. For math-heavy documents, consider pre-rendering equations as images.
Does this tool support GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM)?
Yes. The Markdown parser is configured with GFM mode enabled, so GitHub-style features like strikethrough, tables, task checkboxes, fenced code blocks, and autolinks are all fully supported.
Can I use this Markdown to PDF converter on a mobile browser?
Yes. The layout is responsive and switches to a stacked view (editor on top, preview below) on narrow screens. You can type or upload a .md file and download the PDF on any modern mobile browser, including Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS.
Does the converted PDF include clickable hyperlinks from the Markdown text?
Links are rendered as styled anchor elements in the HTML preview. Whether they remain clickable in the final PDF depends on the pdf rendering engine. Most modern PDF viewers will detect hyperlinks automatically.
Are my uploaded Markdown files saved on remote servers?
No. Your Markdown content exists only in your browser's memory. Nothing is transmitted, stored, or logged on any server. Closing or refreshing the browser tab clears all content.
Can I adjust font sizes and line heights for the PDF layout?
Font sizes and line spacing are controlled by the selected theme. The Academic theme uses larger, more spaced-out serif typography. The GitHub theme matches GitHub's documentation rendering. Switching themes is the easiest way to adjust the typographic feel of your exported PDF.
Are page breaks supported when writing Markdown?
The PDF engine handles automatic page breaks. You can use an HTML comment <!-- pagebreak --> or a horizontal rule at strategic points in your document to hint where pages should break in the output.
Does the exported PDF add any promotional watermarks?
No. The exported PDF is completely clean with no watermarks, logos, or branding of any kind added to your content.
How quickly does the final PDF generate after writing?
PDF generation typically takes 2 to 6 seconds depending on the length of your document, the complexity of any tables or code blocks, and your device's processing speed. The button shows 'Generating…' during this process.
